The Masters in Education ( Health Promotion ) is a new programme at University of the West Indies that commenced in Trinidad in 2006.

This innovative course aims to develop strong skills in health promotion and health education in general, using HIV/AIDS and sexual health as in-depth case studies.

The programme is designed for professional advancement for people working in health promotion, health education, community development or a related field.

The part-time largely off-campus course structure allows candidates to study from their home country while maintaining their substantive position.

This arrangement makes the course ideally suited to students from the full range of Caribbean countries and makes it attractive to students from North America, Europe, Africa and beyond.

Intensive residential schools are conducted twice a year in the Caribbean country of Trinidad and Tobago (four weeks each year in 2 blocks). The remainder of the course is done by distance.

Elective and research components can be taken in any country providing they meet the quality-assurance requirements of the course. A research project which examines health promotion in relation to stigma and discrimination; gender; and/or HIV prevention will be undertaken. Alternative topics for research will be considered.

The course has 6 components:

  • The health and human relationships knowledge base (HEPR 6001)
  • Risk in the context of modern social lives (HEPR 6002)
  • Strategies, skills and interventions for promoting health (HEPR 6003)
