Caribbean Man Initiative Conference

Dr. Peter Weller, Clinical Pyschologist of the of the U.W.I Health Centre (Mona), makes a key point at the "Man Initiative Conference" held in Kingston, Jamaica.

This Conference was held on January 17-18, 2006 at the Knutsford court Hotel, Kingston Jamaica. The theme of the conference was Man Talk: Caribbean Male Perspectives On issues of Manhood and Gender Equality

Sponsors for the conference were Canada/Caribbean Gender Equality Programme; UWI HARP; United Nations Population Fund; UWI Development and Endowment Fund. The Guest Speaker for the conference was Professor Linden Lewis, Department of Sociology, Bucknell University

UWI HARP Research Meetings, Round two was held on January 9 & 10, 2006. the Meeting continued the clarification and development of a Research Agenda for UWI HARP to support the fight against HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean.

UWI HARP has been awarded a sub-contract with the American-based Education Development Consultants to implement a project which will serve the Education Sector, in its response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The contract has as its focus, peer Education, NGO capacity building, and the strengthening of Youth drop-in Centres in the Caribbean.

The funds for this sub-contract have been awarded by the Japanese government through the Inter-American Development Bank.

UWI HARP has recently been awarded a sub-contract to conduct a Situational Assessment of HIV/AIDS within UWI, and to conduct a Sexual risk Assessment within UWI over the next two years. The funds for this sub-contract has been awarded by the world Bank.
