How can I prevent opportunistic infections (OIs)?
Currently, several of the opportunistic infections that can occur in AIDS can be prevented to some degree with medication. These include Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP), Toxoplasma encephalitis, tuberculosis, Herpes infections and Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infections. When your CD4 count becomes low enough that you may be susceptible to these infections, your doctor will want to start you on these preventive medicines.
